If you were part of the very first edition of this prestigious newsletter, you may have remembered that the subject line read "Test Mail". A blunder on my side or a memorable pun to show my appreciation for those who signed up on day one? You decide.

Today is publishing day, and if you're reading this, it means the latest video on the UHK80 is up and ready to be watched. If you haven't, head on over to YouTube and give it a view; I hope you like it. 🙂

For today's issue of The Cheesy Times, I want to highlight some workflow changes that I've implemented in the latest video and will henceforth be applied to all future videos. If this sounds super boring to you, it probably is, but thanks for reading anyway! 🙇‍♂️

Tonal Change

End of an ERA
Since the inception of the channel, I've been using pretty much the same audio gear (Shure SM7B w/ FetHead), that is until the tail end of last year. This is when I replaced my Arturia Audiofuse 8Pre interface with my even older MixPre 3, as the former died on me.

Software-wise, it's been similar, no changes for the past 5 years until recently, when I finally moved away from Logic Pro to using Fairlight within DaVinci Resolve, my video editing suite. I've been pretty happy, but this also kickstarted a wish of mine to improve the audio, which I've never been particularly happy with.

So I started by looking at my current process, which heavily involves the ERA plugin series I once bought from Accusonus (subscribed, to be precise). Although Accusonus was bought by Meta/Facebook in 2022, you can still use the plugins to this day. But it also means that there haven't been any updates since then, too. And although they worked great and did a lot of the heavy lifting for somebody who has little understanding in audio engineering, they have recently begun to act up and crash my DaVinci Resolve instance.

So I decided it's time to finally figure out this audio thing and spend a bit more time learning how to EQ my voice properly, and so I did.

This is the new way, the manual way
I'm not going to lie, Peter McKinnon's recent video pushed me towards the right direction, but especially this video here from Creative Video Tips was a great help in improving and understanding the process better.

The results of all of this? Well, I think the UHK80 video sounds a lot better; in contrast, the audio from my older videos sounds like they were recorded with a toilet paper roll stuck on top of the microphone. But it's not perfect; there are some elements that still need work. For one, there are quite a few more noticeable clicks and pops, which the ERA plugins were really good at removing.

But I wonder what your thoughts are on this and if you notice any difference or if you actually like this audio vs. the old one. Let me know in the video comments or just reply to this newsletter. 🙂

Anyway, if you are interested in the ERA plugins, you can still download them via the Internet Archive. As free plugins come, they are pretty good, but they do show their age.

Updated Assets!
Another little update: if you've watched the video, you will (possibly) have noticed that I also updated some of the assets I've been using. I also added a 5th Anniversary animation right at the start of the video, my latest attempt at killing my viewer retention all in the name of "style", or lack thereof...

Three's Company!

Finally, here are some related/unrelated tidbits about what has been going on in the past few weeks on this side of the cheese:

  1. Mini Corne!
I forgot when I stumbled over the Corne Min but recently stumbled again, also over this. It's a pretty incredible-looking board, which I hope I can get my hands on someday.
  2. RSS Feed for cheeseturbulence.com
Somebody recently asked regarding an RSS feed on the website. I haven't gotten around to linking it on the page itself. But if you want to, you can subscribe to the feeds here:
    - Articles: cheeseturbulence.com/tag/article/rss
    - Newsletter: cheeseturbulence.com/tag/newsletter/rss
  3. The next video!
I will return to the living room entertainment area in the next video. My Apple TV is starting to show some signs of weakening, and I think it's time I look into alternatives. Which is where I found the Ugoos AM6B Plus, a streaming box that is 5 years old but still packs more punch than even the latest models. Why that is, well, I have to find out myself and will report diligently in the next video. 🫡

Bye!

That's it. Thanks for reading, if you have any question just reply, drop a comment or find me on Instagram. Thanks for reading. Have a wonderful day and see you soon in the next one, bye! 👋
