Good day to you all! It's been about a month since I published the Ugoos AM6B+ video, which means the comments have piled up aplenty (thanks!), and it's time to highlight a few of those (especially about the things I got wrong 🫣).

The current video is in full post-production and will hopefully be done soon as well. So without further ado, let's get into it, and thanks for taking time to read! 🙇‍♂️

The Appendix

Clarifications!
@0xelion added an important detail regarding Dolby Vision and its different profiles:

  • Profile 7 is the only one that uses two layers: the BL, carrying the main HEVC 2160p stream, and the EL, carrying the RPU plus an HEVC 1080p stream.
  • Profiles 5 and 8 work on a single layer, with the RPU embedded in it.
  • Not all FELs are equal, it's very title-dependent. Most add more details but only a few actually have 12-bit colors, luminance boost or fixes for BL.

Blown Out
A few of you mentioned the comparison shot near the end of the video, where everything looked a bit washed out. I'd say this comes down to how I filmed it as well as something that @MahdiYusuf pointed out: the TV being too bright and uncalibrated.

I think this is an important point I did not consider when I made the video, and is something I think might be interesting for a future project 🤔.

Subs!
One thing I didn't mention at all, and which I believe is an important detail, is subtitles. As @LEMON48 points out: you can't reposition or change the brightness of PGS subtitles. For someone who watches a lot of movies and TV shows with subs, I think it's an important detail I missed and is worth knowing.

The Other Ones
Several of you also mentioned alternatives I didn't know about. For example the Zidoo Z9X, from @BrandonZavala and @darmelinceo, and @MysteriesUnfold-ff1en mentioned the Fire TV Cube running CoreELEC. @MegaMaskedrider has also switched to p3i's CoreELEC fork and rates it as the best one for this device, which I might look into myself. 🤔

Three's Company!

Finally, some additional tidbits about what's going on on this side of the cheese.

  • I'm continuing to try and better myself in all things video production and recently came across this course here: https://jacquescrafford.shop/grading-course-enroll
This isn't sponsored at all, and I haven't even finished the course yet, but so far the explanations have opened my eyes about basic things I've done in Resolve for years.
  • The Corne Mini Prototype was in stock again this week and I managed to place an order: https://mechboards.co.uk/products/corne-min?variant=55614872781180
Stay tuned for a future review. 🙂
  • Electronic Materials Office launched their first trailer for the Altar II which looks very interesting (as a render). I am a bit hesitant to pre-order it considering the last experience I had with one of their boards. But curiosity might get the better of me. 😅

Bye!

That's it. 🙂 Thank you so much for reading and if you have any questions just hit reply or find me on Instagram.

Have a wonderful day and see you soon in the next one, bye! 👋
